2022.01.27 22:55 DisingenuousTowel Question about the Crimea annexation

Was curious if any Ukrainians here can provide any anecdotes or personal experiences during the Crimean annexation.
I've been reading about the annexation and the referendum online and most articles/wikipedia insinuate that the referendum was really sketchy and not legitimate for a number of reasons.
So I'm curious if people can provide some first or second hand examples of what is was like for Ukrainians in Crimea during the referendum and subsequent annexation.
I'm an American with Ukrainian roots and my families history (great grandfather escaped his Russian navy conscription by swimming down a river to Romania then fled to Canada) has made me hyper focused on all this for awhile.
Appreciate any insight that can be given and stay strong UKRAINE!

2022.01.27 22:55 Primoridalterror They say there's a word which bestows upon the speaker divine powers-or drives them mad. I'm going to speak it. (Part 1)

There's magic in words.
The right combination of words can compel an unwilling person to serve your will, can plant a symbol or thought like a seed in their imaginations. A certain order of letters and punctuation can bridge the gap between minds and make a person feel seen and understood.
Yes, there is a magic in words. But is of a diminished and degenerated kind. Language is not what it once was. What power words once had has been lost in the never-ending deluge of tweets, thinkpieces, blogs, quizzes, critiques, counter-critiques.
It wasn't always like this. In the old days, before computers or the printing press or the written word itself, a single sharply uttered word could shatter an iceberg or bring down a mountainside. Words were fewer then and more precious. They still had the power to alter reality.
Old words, old magic. All forgotten now. Or almost all. In certain corners of the world, the old words linger on, but they are not easily found, and they are not to be spoken lightly.
I was a bright-eyed student of classical philology when I first heard of the Word. Fifteen years ago now. My eyes are deep hollows in a face dry and creased as old parchment. My hair is streaked with gray. All the lovers and friends I once knew are gone. But none of that matters now. Because after years of fruitless search, I've found it. The Word which bestows upon the speaker the powers of a God.
It was no easy thing finding it, I can assure you. Fifteen years of study and still I know little of it. There are entire libraries written on the Word, but they are scattered across the globe, and they disagree on nearly detail of the Word and its true nature.
The author of a crumbling manuscript I found in an ancient library in Istanbul argued that the Word was angelic, and that only the pure of heart could read it without bringing down the wrath of God.
A tome I found in the heart of the Vatican archives(how precisely I managed to gain access to that venerable institution is a story for another occasion) said otherwise. It claimed the Word was in fact infernal, the true name of one of the Nine Demon Kings of Hell, and that to speak the name was to offer your soul to his eternal servitude.
The brief fragments of the Word I was able to find suggested to me some ancient root of the Indo-European tree, sharing as it did a few characters with Sanskrit. But a coffee-stained, moth-eaten volume I read in a university library said the Word was older still. The book was an antique, published and printed in 1890. According to the checkout page at the front, the last time the book had been taken from the library was in 1942. There was no recorded check in, yet here the book stood. The book said the Word was as old as language itself, a remnant of the language spoken by the people of Babel before it fell.
At a garage sale at an old manor in north-eastern Rhode Island, I located a copy of a disgraced eighteenth century scholar's diary. It's said that he devoted his life to the study of the word, and that it drove him to madness.
In the diary, he speculated that the Word was even older still, old as time itself. He said the Word was in fact the first word spoken by God at the dawn of creation to divide light from dark. He said the Word had been taught to Adam and Eve in the Garden so that God might share the joy of creating with his children, but that it was hidden away after the Fall. Not long after writing these words, the scholar hanged himself.
However much disagreement there may be about its nature, I have been able to draw a few firm conclusions about the Word:
1)It is long, long enough to try a man's endurance. A twelfth century Arabian scholar who claimed to have found and mastered the Word reported that the attempt to speak it took him seven days and seven nights. A Victorian scholar was more modest, asserting that a proper reading of the Word would take seven hours in total. I have reason to suspect this latter claim is closer to accurate.
2)It is powerful. Every single source I came across in my long years of search agreed on one thing-the Word had the power to bestow upon the speaker unfathomable power, the power to remake reality itself.
3)It is dangerous. The Word is at least as long as a short novel or an epic poem, and every single syllable must be pronounced correctly. If any part of it is misspoken, depending upon the part, the consequences can range from harmless-the spell simply fails to work-to apocalyptic-reality itself is obliterated in a second Big Bang. The more I looked into the Word, the more I noticed a pattern amongst its scholars and devotees. Nearly every last one of them to a man met with some terrible fate or simply disappeared off the face of the earth. If I were a wiser one, or a better one, this fact would have deterred me from my searches. But I am not and it did not.
I was able to uncover a few key details about the Word, but somewhere in the middle of my investigations, I began to hit a frustrating standstill. A museum director would agree to allow me to view an antique book in their collection, only to extend their apologies the day of, claiming it was in fact quite impossible. I would win an auction for an ancient manuscript, only for the seller to refund my bid without explanation. The more it went on, the more I began to suspect that there was some group or entity stymieing my efforts. I started to receive cryptic and threatening letters in the mail. I felt watched everywhere I went, whether it was a crowded public square or a silent library. I began to feel unsafe in my own home.
I must tread carefully here. What little I know I cannot say without endangering certain parties-including you, dear readers. They cannot stop me from publishing this account, but They can certainly track its distribution and record the IP addresses of all those who read it. I know there are those among you who will not be able to resist; who, after reading this account, will begin the long obsessive hunt for the Word just as I did fifteen years go. Be warned, then: there are shadowy forces in the world which protect the Word. Their reach is long, their resources many. And they are watching you.
One day, I packed up as many things as I could in a single suitcase, locked up my house, purchased an airline ticket to an arbitrary location, and left the country without informing anyone. I spent the next few years always on the move, only ever stopping in a town for a couple weeks at a time. With the trail cold, I abandoned the search for a long time, focusing instead on simply remaining alive. After the passage of several years, when I felt it safe to resume the search, I found all my old leads had disappeared like a trail of breadcrumbs in a forest. Every scattered reference to the Word in some obscure scholarly journal had been wiped. Every academic that had been willing to speak with me about it had changed their number and address. Things seemed hopeless.
Until last month. I will not tell you where I acquired it, or how, or who from. I do not wish those who aided me to incur the wrath of Them, and moreover, I do not want the Word to fall into the hands of an irresponsible party. But I have located a full transcript of the Word, and a key to its proper pronunciation. I have spent the intervening going over the Word over and over again in my head, and I think I'm finally ready. There's no use in trying to dissuade me from the attempt. Tomorrow evening, I will speak the Word, and record the results of my efforts. Wish me luck, dear reader.

I (24M) got a girl aged 23 pregnant, and the issue is that when she went to the hospital, the doc said, she's got complications and if she proceeds with the abortion she'd lose her ovaries. Her dad found out about everything and he's pressuring into marrying her daughter, on the grounds that I've destroyed her future, and I have to marry, I wanna know, is it possible for abortion to cause such complications?

2022.01.27 22:55 slinkys_in_my_ass Brand new to reinsurance and need advice

I have two job offers. One is from one of the “big two” from Europe (company A). One is from a certain company named after a tall mountain (Company B). The title/role is exactly the same. Both are located in the same locale. Company A pays slightly better, but the team seemed more successful at B, and they promised a lot more progression. I’m curious what everyone would do in my situation. Thanks!

2022.01.27 22:55 Aslanovich1864 Testing new way to learn language - feedback needed

I put together a new way to learn a lesson and I was hoping a few people wouldn’t mind checking it out and letting me know what you think?
I’m trying to create a new, more effective way to teach languages, so anyone willing to listen and give feedback is appreciated.
Basically, I’m looking for people that fit this category:

The lesson is 6 minutes and there’s a survey with 8 multiple choice questions at the end.
For now, I’m just testing it out on these two languages:
German: Check out the new lesson.
